This brief article will evaluate the uses and misuses of general revelation in biblical hermeneutics. After defining terms, I will highlight areas in hermeneutics where the use of general revelation can be beneficial, as well as areas where misuse can and does occur. Overall, I’ll argue that a proper understanding of general revelation is indispensable in the determination of its proper use in hermeneutics.

Cultural hermeneuticists and literal grammatical historicists can agree on at least one point: culturally-driven interpretations are not to be found in the Bible itself. As Dispensationalists, we hold to the consistent application of literal-grammatical-historical hermeneutics to find the single original meaning that the author intended.

If the church is to remain faithful, we must build theology the way the prophets, the apostles, and even our Lord Himself modeled: by appealing to the Scriptures as the final and binding authority. Biblical theology grows from exegesis, systematic theology grows from biblical theology, and our preaching and living must flow from this foundation.
